Over the past 15 years, the Earl and Hazel Engel Award has honored outstanding Hampshire community volunteers and employees.

Former Hampshire resident Bonnie Engel sponsors the award in memory of her parents, Earl and Hazel Engel.

“My parents both grew up on farms in the Hampshire-Burlington area,” Bonnie said. “They were citizens and local business owners in the Hampshire community from 1957 to 1975.”

The award is presented during the annual Hampshire Coon Creek Country Days, which will run this year from Thursday, July 30, to Sunday, Aug. 2.

The late Hampshire Mayor William Schmidt and his wife, Dorothy, were the first recipients of the award. Hampshire Detective Roy Maki won the award in 2014.

Qualifications for winning the award, according to Bonnie, are: “exemplary performance in meeting the roles and responsibilities of the nominee’s position, demonstration of an outstanding commitment to the general welfare of the people in Hampshire in actions and kind understanding, and creative leadership or commitment to effectively solve unique challenges.”

The deadline for nominations for this year’s Engel award is Friday, July 10.

Nominations can be mailed to Bonnie at P.O. Box 740779, Orange City, FL 32774; [email protected].
