The owner of a West Highland white terrier stolen from a West Loop apartment last week said the dog was turned in Wednesday afternoon to a North Side shelter.
Barnaby was turned in at PAWS Chicago, 1997 N. Clybourn Ave., on Wednesday afternoon after someone spotted a man who looked like the burglar who had stolen the dog from Adam Johnston’s West Loop apartment about 1:20 p.m. May 18, Johnston said in a text message.
Someone saw a man who looked like the burglar at a local pet supply store Wednesday afternoon and tried to get a cellphone photo of him, but he immediately left the store, Johnston said in a post on his Find Barnaby Facebook page.
“We think maybe the suspect was spooked at having been recognized, but really don’t know for sure,” according to the post.
Surveillance video released by Johnston shows someone going into the apartment building through a garage door and leaving a few minutes later with the dog. The victim called police about 5 p.m. May 18 to report he had discovered his apartment had been broken into and his dog stolen, police said.
Barnaby, who is 6 1/2 years old, had just been returned to Johnston’s apartment by a dog walker, Johnston said.
Surveillance video shows a white man with a dark beard wearing all-black or dark clothing, including a dark baseball cap, walk out of the garage with the dog in his arms and get into a small dark sedan.

Johnston had offered a reward for the dog’s return.
