Highland Park’s Jacob Edelchik played one of the most grueling Deerfield Sectional semifinal matches Saturday, May 23, in his 7-6 (6-1), 4-6, 6-2 win over Deerfield senior Noah Rosenblat. It was the only match in the semifinals or finals of either the singles or doubles draw to go three sets.

Although Edelchik, a sophomore, started the title match against Glenbrook North sophomore Mark Wu, he couldn’t complete it, defaulting due to illness. Highland Park coach Steve Rudman said Edelchik will be ready to go for the state tournament.

“He’s fine,” Rudman said.

Edelchik should be in line for one of the state’s seeds in singles, Rudman said. Edelchik played singles at the state meet as a freshman.

“He’s developed a big-boy game this year,” Rudman said. “He doesn’t just grind it out from the baseline. He has the ability to come to the net and finish. We are looking for big things from him.”

The doubles team of senior Max Gordon and junior David Aizenberg was Highland Park’s other state qualifier. The pair finished third at the sectional to help the Giants to second place as a team (23 points). Glenbrook North won with 28 points.
