Danny Farmer ended another legacy for Fenwick boys water polo after playing his final game Saturday, May 23, in the state tournament.

Danny Farmer and his older brother, Matt, were the latest pairs of brothers to make an impact during their careers with the Friars. Danny Farmer scored four goals Saturday to finish with 127 on the season.

Fenwick claimed its first third-place trophy at Stevenson after beating St. Ignatius 17-13. The Friars (34-2), the defending state runner-up, suffered a stunning 8-7 loss to host Stevenson in the semifinals.

“It wasn’t the end we wanted, but to win your last game and with your friends is always a good feeling,” Danny Farmer said.

Stevenson scored the first five goals and held off a desperate Friars’ comeback to end the fourth quarter.

Fenwick beat Stevenson three previous times this season by combined scores of 39-21.

Danny Farmer was limited to two goals in the semifinals after scoring six in a 16-9 quarterfinal win over Barrington.

His next stop is Bucknell, where he is set to become at least the fourth former Fenwick boys water polo player to play at the Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, school. Former Friar Matt Bresnahan was a sophomore on the team last season.

The only sons of Jim and Bea Farmer of La Grange shared Fenwick’s 2013 title in their last season as teammates. Matt Farmer graduated in 2013 and was a starter for UCLA’s national championship men’s water polo team.

Danny Farmer suffered a right shoulder injury last season and remained healthy this entire season for the Friars.

“They were both similar in leadership ability,” Fenwick coach Kyle Perry said. “Matt was more vocal, but Danny could motivate guys when they needed to be motivated.”

Fenwick has won 10 state championships and never lost in a state final until 2014.
