Five Reavis High School seniors will face rapid-fire questions on everything from Earth science to math and physics as they represent the Midwest this weekend in the National Science Bowl.

The team is one of 116 from 68 high schools and 48 middle schools around the country competing in the 25th annual event sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science in Chevy Chase, MD.

The Reavis coach is mathematics teacher, Joseph Illichman, who will accompany seniors Roann Yanes, Nizar Alqam, Marcin Jachymiak, Regine Rolle and Amer Darshalabi.

The science bowl tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Each team has four members and an alternate who must answer questions on a range of disciplines, including biology, chemistry and energy.

To reach the finals, the Reavis team members won the regional competition. All together, more than 9,500 high school students and 4,500 middle school students competed in tournaments, Ethan Alpern, communications specialist with the DOE, said in a press release..

“We expect very intelligent kids, with a true enthusiasm for STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in the National Science Bowl,” he said.

The competitors will be whittled down this weekend to two high schools and two middle schools, who then will face each other.
