Senior middle hitter Joe Swoboda had five kills and five blocks as the Maine East boys volleyball team beat Deerfield 25-21, 25-19 in a Central Suburban North match on Tuesday, April 28, in Park Ridge.

The Blue Demons (14-1, 5-0) never trailed in the second game, and the win was capped by a Swoboda kill. Jon Kulesza said this is the program’s best start in his 15 seasons as Maine East’s coach.

Senior outside hitter Lerin Mathew finished with a team-best nine kills and three blocks. Senior middle Andrew Fox had seven kills, and junior outside hitter Patrick Malkowski added four kills.

“Joe and Lerin are our leading hitters, but we have five guys who can finish,” Kulesza said. “That helps us a ton.”

Maine East also had 13 blocks. In addition to Swoboda’s five, 6-foot-7 sophomore right-side hitter Michael Boduch had five blocks, four of them solo.

Senior outside hitter Brendan Walsh led Deerfield (10-8, 3-2) with 14 kills. The Warriors still are without senior setter Nick Tonner, who continues to recover from a high ankle sprain. Five of their losses have come without Tonner on the court.
