A trial date is expected to be pushed back for a Gurnee man facing drug-induced homicide charges in connection with the death last year of Waukegan 22-year-old Christopher Tiskus.
Kareem Perkins, 31, is charged with drug-induced homicide, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver involving heroin and cocaine, according to the Lake County state’s attorney’s office.
After a brief hearing Monday, Assistant State’s Attorney Jim Newman said Perkins’ May 11 trial date will likely be rescheduled to an unspecified date in June. His next pretrial hearing is now set for April 20, when a trial date may be put on the court schedule, Newman said.
Drug-induced homicide is a Class X felony with a potential sentencing range of six to 30 years in prison upon conviction.
Another Gurnee man, Haitham Qasem, 28, also faces charges of drug-induced homicide and delivery of a controlled substance related to the same case.
On March 14, 2014, Waukegan police were called to a home in the 400 block of Keller Avenue at 10:20 p.m. for a person who was not breathing. Officers found Tiskus dead at the scene, and it was determined he died from a drug overdose, police and prosecutors said.
Gang Intelligence Unit detectives took Perkins into custody three days later.
