Students entering the Franklin Park library recently got to choose between books, DVDs, compact discs and prom dresses.
During the annual Once Upon A Prom event organized by fashion students at Leyden high schools, girls can get a free “gently used” prom dress.
“They get so excited,” said teacher and organizer Laurie Foss. “A lot thank us, saying they couldn’t go to prom because they couldn’t afford a dress.”
The 25 girls who showed up on April 10 had a “personal shopper” fashion student to assist them in picking out a dress.
Once Upon A Prom started as an internal event at West Leyden High School in 2009. Two years later, they moved it to the Franklin Park Library and opened it up to students from other high schools.
