For men were wounded, one critically, in separate shootings that began Friday, police said Monday.

Two victims were wounded at scenes of recent shootings, police said.

Turnley Horton, 31, of Gary, was critically wounded during a fight about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, outside the Voodoo Lounge, 5060 Broadway, police said.

Security guards inside the bar heard there was an altercation in the parking lot adjacent to the bar and as they walked out, heard gunfire and saw a man standing near Horton and firing at him several times, Lt. Thomas Pawlak said.

Patrolman George Dickerson fired at the shooter, who was wearing a blue and white jogging suit, Pawlak said. The suspect ran from the scene, then fled north in a dark SUV driven by another man, he said.

Detective Cpl. James Nielsen is investigating the shooting.

The weekend shootings began Friday evening when Jerome Curtis, 44, of Gary, was delivering campaign signs in the 1300 block of Roosevelt Street when an occupant of a purple car started shooting, striking Curtis in the arm and chest.

Travis Thomas, 22, was wounded outside the same address April 5 during a daylight shooting, police said.

Pawlak said investigators do not believe Curtis was the intended victim. Sgt. Dan Callahan is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call him at 881-1210.

Early Saturday, Demane Jones, 46, was wounded as he walked around the side of a house where Robert Armstead, 29, was killed April 1 at his home in the 4400 block of Connecticut.

A relative of Armstead’s who lives in Indianapolis and was in the area for the funeral, said he was outside waiting for another relative to give him a ride to the hotel about 1:45 a.m. when he saw a man wearing all black walk from between the houses. The man, later identified as Jones, reached for something in his pocket and his actions alarmed the relative, who shot at the man. The relative stayed at the scene and surrendered his gun to police. Investigators have not been able to interview Jones because of his condition, but said they will wait to do that before determining if charges are appropriate, Pawlak said.

Sgt. William Fazekas is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call him at 881-1210.

The fourth shooting occurred early Monday in the 3900 block of Virginia Street, police said. Dennis Wheeler, 53, of Gary, told police he was sitting on the porch with a friend about 4 a.m. when a white Chevrolet Blazer passed by and someone inside started shooting. Wheeler was shot in the groin and taken to the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for treatment. Lake County Detective Jeff Minchuk is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call him at 881-1210.
