After numerous interviews, school board officials didn’t have to look far to select a new principal for Elmwood Elementary School.
Kevin Seibel, 54, who has been assistant principal at Elmwood Elementary School for the past nine years, was selected as the school’s new principal at the March 18 Elmwood Park Community Unit District 401 School Board meeting.
Mary Bruscatto, school board president, said he applied along with others for the position, and after numerous interviews he was selected for the position.
“He’s earned it and deserves it,” she said. “He’s done a great job.”
He will take over the position in July, replacing his current superior, Sue Ponzio, who has been principal at the school for the past nine years and assistant principal for five years prior to that. Ponzio, who has developed close ties with students and staff in the district, said Seibel is the right choice.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “We’ve been working together for nine years and a perfect fit.”
Seibel, who has lived in Elmwood Park for more than 20 years, said he’s very excited about the new opportunity.
He said he credits Ponzio with helping him make the next move.
“I’ve benefited from working with her,” she said. “Ponzio has been a great mentor and I’ve learned a lot.”
He wasn’t clear on specific changes he’d like to implement once he becomes principal, but said what changes he make would be positive.

“I’ve got some ideas in terms of changes, but it will be in the line with things that we’ve done,” he said.
But he believes the school board made the right choice choosing him.
“I’m the right guy to move us forward on the pathways we created, and create some new ones, as a school and as a community,” he said.
