Jury selection began Monday for the trial of Surgene Cabell Jr., who faces an attempted murder charge in connection with a stabbing that left a fellow Zion resident in critical condition last fall.

The Zion 26-year-old pleaded not guilty in January to attempted murder and aggravated battery. He is accused of stabbing the victim multiple times during a dispute on Sept. 14, 2014.

Attempted murder is a Class X felony carrying a sentencing range of six to 30 years in prison. Cabell has been held in Lake County Jail on $150,000 bail since his arrest by Zion police.

Cabell was in an argument with a 24-year-old man when he allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim several times, according to Cynthia Vargas, spokeswoman for the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The victim was taken to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he was initially listed in critical condition.

Judge Mark Levitt is presiding over the trial.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jim Newman said Monday he expects the trial to conclude by Wednesday.
