Q: Even after the team lost in the state semifinals to Fremd, the players were able to bounce back and win that third-place game against Homewood-Flossmoor. Tell me about the morning after the loss and before the win.
A: Coming off that loss was tough. We had a practice that day at Illinois Wesleyan, but we didn’t really practice. We played knockout, some shooting games, juniors vs. seniors. We just had fun with each other. It helped us clear our mind, and it showed the kind of chemistry we had on that team.
Q: Your dad, Andy Greer, has been an assistant coach with the Chicago Bulls for five seasons. Before that, he was on coaching staffs for three other NBA teams. What’s one of your favorite stories to tell about meeting a pro?
A: It’s actually one about my younger sister, Blake. She loves Derrick Rose, has this huge obsession with him. We met him one time at this team dinner thing, and my sister was speechless. [Rose] said, “Hi” and “Nice to meet you.” But her eyes got big, and she couldn’t say anything.
Q: What is something your dad has done to motivate you?
A: He knows I am serious about playing college basketball, so he put this quote in my room. It says, “You have two choices. Pain of discipline or pain of regret.” He’s trying to get me to be my best every day to reach my goals. It’s about putting as much as you can into your workouts to get the results you want. It’s hung up on my wall and is a cool reminder for me when I wake up every morning.
