Seven police officers and two rounds with a stun gun finally subdued a Gary man enough that he could be handcuffed after allegedly beating a woman with a hammer, then tossing office furniture at police.
Gregory Martin, 63, a resident of a group home operated by Edgewater Systems for Balanced Living, is hospitalized on a psychiatric hold and charged with battery, criminal mischief and resisting law enforcement, police said.
Police were called when Martin allegedly struck a 68-year-old resident in the head, causing a gash that needed three stitches, police said.
Cpl. Donald Briggs was the first to arrive at the group home in the 500 block of Pierce Street on Saturday evening. A supervisor told Briggs that Martin was armed with a hammer and had chased her into an office, then broke a window to climb inside and attempt to assault her, the police report states.
Martin shouted incomprehensibly at police and refused to cooperate, prompting Briggs to use his stun gun. Martin was struck with one prong, but continued to shout and began throwing chairs and computers at Briggs, the report states.
When more police arrived, Briggs fired a second round from his stun gun and was able to get control of Martin, the report states.
