The city is getting an early start on spring cleaning.
Ahead of Chicago’s official April 1 start of street sweeping season and the city’s runoff election April 7, the city this week dispatched crews and 40-plus sweepers to hit the main streets and clean up the dirty remnants of winter.
“As our residents begin their own spring cleaning at home, our fleet of city sweepers will be working during the early morning hours to clean main streets across the city in an effort to improve neighborhood quality of life for residents in our communities,” Mayor Emanuel, who is seeking re-election, was quoted as saying in a news release issued Friday. He’s facing Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in the April runoff.

So far this week, more than 1,000 tons of debris was collected from curb lanes, center lanes and viaducts, according to the city’s Department of Streets and Sanitation. The street sweeping along the arterial streets occurs between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, the release said.
Sweepers will hit residential and side streets citywide beginning April 1. Look for the permanent signs notifying drivers of weekly street cleanings or temporary signs alerting car owners of parking restrictions the day before the sweepers come.
