MUNSTER — A 63-year-old Portage man was killed and a second man was in grave condition Sunday night after what appeared to be a domestic-related shooting, officials said.

Munster police received a call about shots fired at 6:09 p.m. in the 8600 block of Linden Avenue, Lt. Ed Strbjak said Sunday night. When officers responded, they found two men on the ground with gunshot wounds.

The victims were taken to Community Hospital, Strbjak said. Mario Martinez, of the 5100 block of Dolphin Drive in Portage, was pronounced dead from his wound at 6:50 p.m., according to a release Sunday night from the Lake County Coroner.

Officers found the weapon they believe was used at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing but preliminary indications were that the shootings were “domestic in nature” and that there is no threat to the community, Strbjak said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crime Lab is assisting Munster Police in the investigation.
