A 41-year-old man was shot and injured during an early morning robbery Tuesday.

The victim, a resident of the city’s Hessville section, told police he’d just been dropped off around 1 a.m. and was walking toward his home in the 3200 block of 169th Street when a man approached him and asked to use his cell phone, Hammond Police Public Information Officer Lt. Richard Hoyda said in a press release Tuesday. When the victim asked who the man wanted to call, the man pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim’s money.

The victim told police that he raised his arms to defend himself when the man fired the gun; the bullet entered his left forearm and exited through his elbow, Hoyda said. He was taken to a local hospital and has been released.

The suspect is described as a black male in his early 20s, 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing150 pounds. Police said he was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective James Lietz at (219) 852-2983 or the Hammond Police Department at (219) 853-6490.
