The annual Empty Bowls fundraiser at West Leyden High School Feb. 20 was a bit lighter in attendance due to being rescheduled after school was closed for low temperatures the previous week.

Those who did attend, however, took advantage.

“I started with chili, then cheese-broccoli and now the chicken soup,” said Roger Tobias of Harwood Heights.

“It’s really good,” said his wife Carol Tobias. “I’ve had chicken enchilada and cream of tomato.”

For Empty Bowls, the West Leyden Clay Club creates ceramic bowls. Those are then sold for $15 each and can be filled with all-you-can-eat soup and bread donated by local businesses. Money raised goes to the Leyden Food Pantry.

“I’m going to put (my bowl) in the kitchen and put flowers or something in it,” Carol Tobias said.

Jessica Pedersen of Franklin Park took her time looking around a room full of ceramic bowls.

“I collect pottery,” Pedersen said. “These are fabulous. I like when (the creators) sign them.”

This is the seventh year of Empty Bowls, which is a concept used nationwide. Art teacher Caroline Felix organizes the event at West Leyden.
