HAMMOND — The Hammond Police Department has started tagging snowbound cars in order to help the Public Works Department clear the roads of snow.

Per state law, vehicles parked on the public right-of-way must be moved every 72 hours, Lt. Pat Vicari said in a press release. Those that haven’t will be towed by Hammond Police starting Tuesday, and the existing snow will be cleared by Public Works.

The city will conduct the operation over the weekend to give residents a chance to dig out and move their vehicles, he said.

Elderly or differently-abled people who may need assistance removing their vehicles from the snow may contact Hammond Public Works at (219) 853-6431; the Hammond City Court’s Graffiti Removal hotline at (219) 853-6410 (leave a message); or the North Township Trustee’s emergency assistance hotline at (219) 306-1344 (leave a message). Questions or comments should be directed to Vicari at [email protected] or at (219) 712-0182.
