FWC meeting: At its meeting in Jacksonville Feb. 4-5, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission asked staff to move forward with developing specific plans for a limited bear hunt in certain parts of Florida as one of several tools for reducing conflicts with humans. The commission also expanded turkey hunting hours to sunset for the 2016 spring season on several wildlife management areas, including Dinner Island, Fisheating Creek and Corbett in South Florida; established three deer management units in South Florida that will take effect in the fall; and designated the first Saturday after Mother’s Day each year to be Lionfish Removal and Awareness Day to encourage anglers and divers to kill as many lionfish as they can.

Fishing classic: The Bass Pro Shops store in Dania Beach has its annual Spring Fishing Classic Feb. 6-15. Speakers Friday through Sunday include TV fishing show hosts Peter Miller, Pedro Sors and Tom Rowland. George Poveromo will speak at 7 p.m. Monday. Fishing and outdoor cooking tips for women will be at 3 p.m. Feb. 14.

Sailfish tournament: The Sailfish Challenge is Feb. 7 out of Government Cut, Hillsboro Inlet or Lake Worth Inlet. Entry fee is $1,495 per boat. Visit sailfishchallenge.com or call 954-725-4010.

Boat shows: The Miami International Boat Show and the Yacht & Brokerage Show are Feb. 12-16. Python trainings: The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a Python Patrol training for people interested in learning about Burmese pythons and how to identify, report and safely capture the invasive snakes from 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 8 at Oak Ridge Hall at Tree Tops Park, 3900 SW 100th Ave., Davie. Nature walks: Miramar Pineland, 3600 S. University Drive, Miramar, has twice-monthly Sunset Nature Walks for ages 6 and up from 5:30-7 p.m. The next walks is Feb. 8. Cost is $3 per person. Bird counting: Everglades National Park has a Big Day Birding Adventure Feb. 14, where the public helps count birds within the park’s varied habitats. Meet at the Anhinga Trail parking area at 8 a.m. Be prepared to drive your car more than 40 miles to Flamingo, stopping at points of interest along the main park road. Some walking is involved.
