GARY—Larry Willis pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated in Gary City Court Wednesday morning, then asked Judge Deidre Monroe if he could offer an explanation.

“I wouldn’t have been driving but the cops said I had to go,” Willis, 26, said.

“My wife and I got into a disagreement. It was at her mother’s house. I had to go,” he said.

But as the Glen Park man began a left turn against oncoming traffic at Ridge Road and Grant Street, his Monte Carlo was struck by a truck that appeared to have the right of way, the crash report states.

Cpl. Troy Campbell responded to the scene at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and noted Willis exhibited signs of intoxication. Willis was arrested at the scene, police said.

Monroe set his next hearing for April 9 and released him.
