Monday, Feb. 2: GROUNDHOG DAY IN WOODSTOCKIs there any place more perfect to host Groundhog Day festivities than Woodstock, the Illinois hamlet 90 minutes north of the Loop? (Well, OK, Punxsutawney — the Pennsylvania home of Groundhog Day, dating to the 18th century — just might be No. 1.) Hundreds of folks will gather in the early morning with a polka band in Woodstock Square, where the classic comedy “Groundhog Day” was filmed, to see if furry little Woodstock Willie sees his shadow when he emerges from a tree trunk. The event is free; a ticketed breakfast follows at the Woodstock Moose Lodge, with live music (including high school singers) and photo ops with a human-sized Woodstock Willie. Where: Woodstock Square in downtown Woodstock (815-334-2620, woodstockgroundhog.org) When: 7 a.m. prognostication; official breakfast follows the ceremony. Cost: Free for prognostication, $15 for breakfast.
