The sign affixed to the side of Elmwood Elementary School recently got a bright new facelift, but it didn’t come easy.
Christy Bendersky, head of the school’s Parents and Teachers Together (PATT) Association said they had been having fundraisers for years to raise enough money to pay for a new digital sign for the school. They finally came up with the $10,000 needed to pay for the new digital sign, which was installed on Jan. 20.
Bendersky said having a new sign was on the school principal’s wish list.
“We were happy to fulfill her request before she retires,” she said. “It’s been in the works since August, but it was kind of a slow process.”
She said the school janitor is happy with the change as well. With the old sign, school announcements had to be put up manually, one letter at a time.

“It was tough for our poor janitor to go out in the cold to slap up the signs,” she said.
Now the digital sign brightly displays information about school events and slogans and can be seen easily from a distance at night.
Sue Ponzio, principal of Elmwood School, said the students, teachers and staff are very happy about the new sign.
“We’re very excited to have it,” she said. “Not only is it easy to use, but easy to update and we can get more information out to the public in a nice colorful way.”
Bendersky said the sign was worth the time PATT spent raising money to get it.
“It’s a great addition,” he said. “It’s going to make it so much easier for parents to see it.”
