Some new political candidates have joined the race for offices in River Grove and Elmwood Park.

A newcomer, Colm Mitchell, is challenging three Elmwood Park Village Board incumbents who are running for re-election. Mitchell, submitted his petitions to be put on the board on Dec. 22, the deadline for those running for local elections in April to file.

Mitchell has lived in Elmwood Park for the majority of his life and is currently works as a substitute teacher in Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401. He’ll face off against incumbents Angela Stranges, Alan Kaminski and Jonathan Zivojnovic; the top three vote-getters will win seats.

District 401 also has newcomers vying for school board seats.

Lauren Platt and Andrea A. Sciullo have filed petitions to be put on the April ballot, each running for one of four seats on the school board. Incumbent school board member Peter Volpe has also turned in his petitions to run for the school board, along with fellow incumbents Mary Bruscato, Michael Scheidt and Jason Shipinski.

In River Grove, Village Board incumbents Tracy Aller, Lynn Bjorvick and Robert Thomas are running for re-election, but a new candidate has joined the race. Henry Bramski, a real estate agent who previously ran for trustee in 2009, is vying for one of the three board seats.
