Election season is under way again, and locals are vying to fill seats on village and library boards for the upcoming municipal election in April.

Monday was the first day for candidates to file paperwork to be on the ballot for the April 7 election.

In River Grove so far, incumbents have thrown their names into the hat right away.

There are three seats up on River Grove Village Board, and incumbent trustees Tracy Aller, Lynn Bjorvik and Robert Thomas have submitted their petitions for re-election. No others have submitted paperwork yet.

There are three trustee seats up on River Grove Library Board, according to River Grove Library Board President Michael Prokop. The board’s two appointed members, Geri Dembrowski and Dennis Ryan, will run for re-election.

The third seat, currently filled by Frank Bixy, will be up for grabs because he does not plan to run again, according to Prokop. He said if that seat is not filled by an elected candidate, Prokop said the board would have to appoint someone to the seat after the election.

There are four people currently running for three trustee seats on the Elmwood Park Library Board. Incumbents Chris Pesko, Carole Bilbo and Marisa Santangelo are running for re-election, with newcomer Elsa Volpe will also vying for one of those seats.

Pesko is married to Elmwood Park Village Clerk Gina Pesko, while Volpe is married to Peter Volpe, who chairs Elmwood Park’s Economic Development Commission and is the brother of Elmwood Park Village Manager Paul Volpe.

Elmwood Park Village Board trustee incumbents Angela Stranges, Alan Kaminski and Jonathan Zivojnovic turned in their petitions Dec. 15 to run for re-election. No other candidates have submitted petitions to be put on the ballot yet.

Candidates who want to run for office in Elmwood Park or River Grove have until Dec. 22 to file their paperwork.

An earlier version of this story that appeared online and in print stated the wrong election date. The election is in April.
