Students from St. Celestine Catholic School were recently recognized for their hard work and involvement in the school’s science competition.

Out of 70 seventh- and eighth-grade students who presented their science project at the school’s fair, only four were selected as Best of Show. The four students, who are all in the eighth grade, are: Jake Briskey, Kayla DeCicco, Elyse Hroma and James Malo. They will now move on to compete against other students at Museum of Science and Industry in the spring. If chosen, they could move on to the state competition.

The students were recognized at the Dec. 1 Elmwood Park Village Board meeting for their achievements.

Jeanine Rocchi, principal of St. Celestine Catholic School, said the students were questioned about their projects at the school’s science fair.

“They have a display, they have to do a presentation to the judges and show it to the students,” she said. “They have to write a paper, do a science experiment, collect data and follow a scientific method.”

For example, DeCicco did her science and project on what’s the best SPF sunblock, while Malo’s project was on how easy it is to guess a person’s computer PIN password. Rocchi is happy with what this group of students has accomplished.

“These kids did a nice job,” he said. “We’ve been doing a science fair for over 20 years and many of them have gone on to the state. They learn a lot.”
