With the purchase of their first home, the Walkers brought out their love of decorating during the holidays.
In the past, Brad and Christy Walker have been renters, but their Elmwood Park house, at the southeast corner of 73rd Avenue and Bloomingdale Avenue, is their first purchase. They’ve lived there for about a year.
In celebration of being new homeowners, they recently decorated their home on the outside as well as inside for Christmas.
The Christmas lighting on the outside of the house catches the eye, as the lights seem to go on forever along the roof, fence and garage. The windows of the home are also accented with Christmas lights and large colorful tree ornaments hang from the tree in the front yard.
A standing Santa Claus ornament rests at the foot of the steps to their front door, along with life-size candy canes. Another Santa Claus ornament and a snowman ornament sit on top of their roof.
Brad Walker, 30, said he was lucky to have plenty of material to work with.
“My father-in-law had a lot of lights and I kind of inherited his lights,” he said. “I took all of his old lights and extended on it every year.”
His wife, Christy, 29, said her husband did most of the work outside.
“It is really his brainchild every holiday,” she said. “He has the decoration ideas in his head. My parents gave him a lot of lights so it looks cool.”
The Walkers enjoy taking a drive during the Christmas holiday season to observe how other homes are decorated and have noticed they’ve had a few admirers as well.
“Neighbors have said how it looks nice,” he said. “We’ve noticed cars slow down to look.”
Christy Walker said they enjoy decorating during the holidays.
“Halloween is my favorite holiday, but Christmas is gaining ground because of his decorating outside and inside the house,” she said.
Their home has caught the admiring eyes of others.

Their next-door neighbor, Janet Back, is happy they have the Christmas spirit.
“I’m really happy for them,” she said. “They’ve improved their home the moment they moved in. I’m thrilled they are decorating so wonderfully.”
