player ready...Their egos are bruised, their bodies are battered. Nebraska dominated the second half in its 38-17 victory over Northwestern on Saturday, leaving a bevy of injured Wildcats in its wake. Superback Dan Vitale left Ryan Field in a walking boot; receiver Kyle Prater also could not complete the game; and quarterback Trevor Siemian has been limping for weeks.
The good news: Miles Shuler, immobilized for precautionary reasons, was released from the hospital Sunday. Linebacker Collin Ellis (concussion) and safety Ibraheim Campbell (hamstring) are expected back for NU’s next game, Nov. 1 at Iowa. NU’s top goal during the open week: “Get healthy,” coach Pat Fitzgerald said.
Offense
D Dropped passes and shoddy pass protection marred another strong performance by Justin Jackson (128 yards on 22 carries).
Defense
D Remove two kneel-downs and Nebraska gained 213 second-half yards on 25 plays. The Wildcats didn’t sack Tommy Armstrong despite 29 pass attempts, and Godwin Igwebuike dropped an interception.
Special teams
C Chris Gradone averaged just 36.9 yards per punt, but the coverage teams were OK and Jack Mitchell made a 29-yard field goal.
Coaching
D Nebraska’s staff made the proper halftime adjustments; NU’s did not. The Huskers essentially averaged 8.5 yards per play after the break to NU’s 1.1. Superior talent helps, but that’s appalling.
