The key to helping local animal shelters and rescue groups just may be found with the help of social media.

No, literally.

Three keys have been hidden within the Chicago city limits, according to Get-A-Pet.com, and those who follow a series of clues released Monday night and throughout the day on Tuesday on the site’s Facebook and Twitter pages have the chance to win $1,000 and open a van filled with 2,000 pounds of pet food to be donated to the animal rescue of the winner’s choice.

The #DrivePetsHome scavenger hunt arrives in Chicago after launching in New York City last week, where two keys were hidden in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. Only one of the three keys found in Chicago will open the GMC or Chevy van during a ceremony at the Anti-Cruelty Society Wednesday. All food packed inside has been donated by natural pet food companies Purely for Pets, Freekibble.com and Ellen DeGeneres’ Halo brand.

The three clues posted on Monday night reference “the newest #chicago @cubs statue,” Lincoln Park’s history and somewhere with “lots of green space and statues.” More clues will be released starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“We encourage all animal lovers, advocates, and everyone in the city to follow us on Facebook and Twitter (GetAPetToLove) or by using the hashtag #DrivePetsHome, and to get out there and find these keys to not only put at least $500 in cash in your pocket, but to help the animal welfare community, and the animals,” Get-A-Pet’s Kelsey Duckett told RedEye in an email.

The campaign, part of Get-A-Pet’s newest iteration following the publication of Get-A-Pet Magazine from 1995 to 1999 in Southern California, also aims to raise awareness for the organization’s World’s Largest Pet Adoption Fair events. In January 2015, the group hopes to break the Guinness World Record for most animals adopted in a single event.

After Wednesday’s key ceremony, the campaign will make its third stop in Los Angeles.
