Illinois’ unemployment rate fell to 6.7 percent in August, only a slight decrease from the month before but marking the largest year-over-year decline since 1984.

The state’s Department of Employment Security said the rate represents a decline of two-and-a-half percentage points from the same time last year, when the unemployment rate was 9.2 percent.

At the same time, Illinois employers created 13,800 private-sector jobs according to preliminary data released by IDES.

August job growth was led by hires in the leisure and hospitality sector which saw more than 5,000 jobs added and the trade, transportation and utility sectors, which combined saw 4,300 jobs added. Jobs in the services, education and health services and financial activities sectors declined last month, according to IDES data.

In July and August, Illinois’ unemployment rate was six-tenths of a percentage point higher than the national average. The state’s unemployment typically averages that much higher than the national figure.

In August, the national unemployment rate was 6.1 percent.
