The Western Amateur field is made up of players from the likes of Australia, China, Taiwan and New Zealand. But the headline-grabber Wednesday came from Arlington Heights.

Doug Ghim, a recent graduate of Buffalo Grove High School, shot an 8-under 63 to break the 47-year-old competitive course record at The Beverly Country Club on the city’s Southwest Side. By draining a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-5 No. 18, Ghim eclipsed Tom Weiskopf’s 64 set during the 1967 Western Open Pro-Am.

“We just played smart all day,” Ghim said of his bogey-free round. “For most of the day, I was underneath the hole and made a couple of putts along the way.”

At 10-under, Ghim is three strokes ahead of California’s Bryson DeChambeau.

Those who survived Wedneday’s cut will play 36 holes of stroke play Thursday to determine the “Sweet 16” who advance to match play.
