A Chicago mother has been charged with felony child endangerment after her 22-month-old daughter died while in the care of the woman’s bedridden husband overnight one night in February.
Cook County authorities said Jasmine Robinson, 23, had left the daughter, Mariah Robinson, and two other young children about 9 p.m. on Feb. 14 with her cancer-stricken husband, who was unable leave his bed.
When she returned home in the 6900 block of South Jeffery Boulevard about 11:30 a.m. the following day, Robinson found her daughter dead on a couch atop an empty bottle of methadone her husband used to control his pain, Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen Rogers said Monday at bond court. Rogers did not say why Robinson spent the night away from home.
She was arrested at her home on Sunday after the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office determined the child died due to an overdose. At the bond hearing Monday, Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered Robinson held on $75,000 bail.
Robinson’s attorney said her other two children, 4 and 5, are now in the custody of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
