A Cicero man was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail Sunday after he allegedly struck and killed a woman with his van more than a year ago.

Sigmond R. Bajger, 64, of the 3300 block of South 60th Court, faces reckless homicide charges in connection to the Sept. 12, 2012 incident that killed Anita Garcia.

Bajger was driving west in the 6000 block of West Ogden Avenue when he made an improper left turn, failed to yield to oncoming traffic and struck Garcia. 64, as she was crossing the street, according to court records and Assistant State’s Attorney Anisa Jordan.

Neither the prosecution nor Bajger’s attorney could explain why charges were coming more than 14 months after the incident.

Bajger called police and stayed on the scene after the incident, Jordan said.

He was identified by witnesses as the driver of the red van that struck Garcia, according to Jordan.

She succumbed to her injuries the same day, Jordan said Sunday in Cook County Bond Court.

Bajger was on supervision for a DUI charge, but tests indicated he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time, Jordan said.
