A 4-year-old boy died this afternoon after the bike he was on went into traffic on a busy northwest suburban road and he was struck by a back axle of a semi-trailer truck, officials said.
The boy, whose identity was not being released, was declared dead on the scene at 1:44 p.m. in the 2200 block of East Oakton Street in unincorporated Cook County near Elk Grove Village and Mount Prospect, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The boy was on a two-wheel bike when it went down a driveway from a mobile home park in the 2300 block of Oakton about 1:30 p.m., and the bike went onto Oakton, said Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sophia Ansari.
The boy was hit by the rear tandem axle of a semi-tractor trailer truck that was headed west on Oakton, Ansari said.
The driver of the truck stopped, and a male passenger with her tried to help the boy, but was unable to, Ansari said.
No citations have been issued in the accident.
