ComEd said it has wrapped up digital upgrades to a substation aimed at improving reliability for nearly 30,000 South Side customers.
The Wallace “smart” substation in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood uses technology to cut the number and frequency of power outages. It allows ComEd to better monitor the power system and respond faster to problems as they arise, rather than after the lights go out. The substation is equipped with sensors that analyze information quickly and alert ComEd operators before or during a problem.
The Wallace facility is the first to be transformed into a smart substation under the Smart Grid law enacted by the Illinois General Assembly in 2011. ComEd plans to convert 10 substations using this technology over the next five years.
