Thirteen area companies say they may cut more than 1,100 jobs in the near future, according to the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act report for February.
Some of the 1,100 possible job cuts had been previously announced by individual companies. The biggest potential job cuts were reported by FreightCar America Inc. The Danville-based railcar maker didn’t provide a reason for the cuts.
Last month, the company reported a fourth-quarter loss and slipping sales due to a decrease in coal demand. It warned that this year would be a challenging one for its business, vowing to control costs to counter some of the shortfall.
ARL Peoria Management also said it may cut 122 positions, citing a lost contract.

Lost contracts were also blamed for 69 potential job losses at trucking company Schneider National’s center in Elwood and as many as 87 job cuts with caterer Flying Food Fare Midway LLC.
Other companies warning of layoffs included Ball Metal Beverage Packaging Co., General Cable and John Costigan Residential Center.
