Just months removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL, Jonas Gray didn’t hear his name called during the NFL Draft. But the former Notre Dame tailback emerged from the weekend with a chance.
Gray signed a free-agent contract with the Dolphins, the 223-pound running back announced on his Twitter account moments after the draft ended Saturday.
Gray tore his ACL on Nov. 19 against Boston College as he approached the end of a revelatory senior season. A bit player for his first three years, Gray would nudge Cierre Wood out of the starting gig by rushing for 812 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final campaign.
The injury, obviously, cast a pall on his NFL outlook, though Gray was on the field running and cutting at Notre Dame’s pro day, less than five months removed from the ACL surgery. He did not, however, participate in drills such as the 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and vertical jump.
In addition, undrafted Irish tackle Taylor Dever announced he signed a free-agent deal with the Cowboys on Saturday.
