Crestwood police are investigating an incident in which a police SUV driven by an on-duty commander allegedly struck a 19-year-old man in a wheelchair and then left the scene, officials said.

A police commander driving an unmarked police Chevrolet Tahoe about 9 p.m. March 17 bumped the hand of the teen in the parking lot of Hollywood Park, a family entertainment center, police said.

“At first, our officer didn’t realize any contact was made,” Mayor Robert Stranczek said. The commander left the parking lot, and someone there called authorities, the mayor said.

The 19-year-old was treated at the scene with an ice pack and declined further treatment, Stranczek said.

Crestwood Sgt. Chris Soderlund said the teen told police that the Tahoe “tapped” his wheelchair.

“It sounds like a very minor incident,” the mayor said.

Investigators have reviewed surveillance video of the incident.

“I don’t see anybody reacting as if an accident occurred,” Soderlund said.

Stranczek said the commander, who authorities said had been driving with three police cadets, has not been put on leave. Authorities declined to show the police incident report to the Tribune or to name those involved, citing the ongoing investigation.
