Bad news, folks: Long Grove Apple Haus, famous for its terrific apple cider doughnuts for 35-plus years, has succumbed to the economy and closed. Our colleagues at TribLocal have the full story.

A few months ago, I was singing the praises of their doughnuts. Here’s what I wrote:

“It was a sad day in 1999 when Long Grove’s cherished Apple Haus announced it would no longer press cider on-site. The job was being outsourced to a farm co-op in south Michigan. The good news was that production of its apple cider doughnuts, beloved since the store opened in 1976, was staying put. What makes these moist and cakelike doughnuts different is — as the name suggests — a double dose of apple cider: in the batter, then glazed after they emerge from the fryer.”

There’s no word whether the doughnuts would return to Long Grove’s annual Apple Festival, but here’s hoping.
