A Riverside-Brookfield High School student faces misdemeanor juvenile charges after he allegedly threw an apple that struck a band member during a school assembly, authorities said Tuesday.
Police said they were called to the high school Thursday morning and arrested the 17-year-old boy after he allegedly confessed to school officials.
“What happened was the student offender threw an apple during a school assembly” on Wednesday, Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said. “We were told that the apple was thrown from the back, top of the balcony across the auditorium stage and hit a female band member.”
The band member suffered minor injuries, he said.
Weitzel said the teen was cited in a juvenile petition for misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct and was released into his mother’s custody later that day. The Tribune is not identifying the teen because he is a juvenile.
Neither the school principal nor the district superintendent could be reached for comment.
Weitzel said he was not aware of any previous contact between his department and the student. He said the apple toss appeared to be a simple case of poor judgment.
“I don’t think there was intent here to harm anybody,” he said. “From our investigation, we determined he wasn’t attempting to strike the student; he didn’t pick her out from the balcony and say, ‘That’s the one I want to hit.'”
