Former Illinois defensive tackle Chris Norwell, who learned he had cancer last fall, is on the road back. His sister, Ingrid Browning, said he is now cancer-free.

“His tumor was still there, but all his scans show no cancer cells,” Browning said.

Norwell, a senior starter on the Illini’s 2008 Rose Bowl team, spent 60 nights in a Cincinnati hospital last fall after he was diagnosed with Burkitt’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Norwell still has daily radiation treatments.

“He’s starting to work out a little, to get an exercise plan in place,” Browning said.

Anderson High in Cincinnati, his alma mater, has converted its annual winter fundraiser into a benefit for the Norwell family. The Feb. 22 event will include 3-on-3 basketball games and a silent auction, which will include memorabilia donated by his former Illinois teammates and the football program.
