Class 5A

St. Francis 28, Montini 14

Records:

St. Francis 11-1, Montini 11-1.

Summary:

RB/LB Stan Bobowski scored three second-half touchdowns and the St. Francis defense held Montini to 59 total yards in the final two quarters as the Spartans avenged their only loss of the season to advance to the Class 5A semifinals. All four of St. Francis’ touchdowns were scored following Montini turnovers, including a fumble that Bobowski recovered and returned 25 yards. The senior’s 1-yard touchdown run three plays later put the Spartans ahead 21-14 with 3:46 to play. St. Francis’ Dave Sufranski intercepted a pass by Montini’s Tom DiCristina and returned it 12 yards to set up Bobowski’s final touchdown, a 2-yard run five plays later to seal the win with 1:37 to play.

Top performers:

St. Francis–Bobowski, 25 carries, 109 yards, 3 TDs (9, 1, 2); RB Mark Kachmer, 14 carries, 89 yards; Montini–QB Tom DiCristina, 16 carries, 63 yards; 13-for-29, 141 yards, 2 TDs (28, 45), 3 INTs.

Extra point:

“There wasn’t a revenge factor. This was just another game to keep us alive,” Bobowski said. “We just had to win this game. We knew we had to come out fast and pick up the intensity. They had shut us down early when our offense wasn’t clicking, but we knew in the second half we would be able to pull it off.”
