NAPERVILLE

City dumps vendor for red-light enforcement

Naperville officials have pulled the plug on the company it hired to operate red-light enforcement cameras at two city intersections.

Citing Trafficpax’s failure to meet project deadlines and various conditions of the contract, the City Council voted 7-1 Tuesday to terminate its three-year, $1 million deal with the Baltimore-based firm. The cameras, installed at Fort Hill Drive and Aurora Avenue and 95th Street and Book Road, were supposed to be operational in January.

They weren’t ready until March and then failed to perform up to the standards stipulated in the contract, officials said.

The city will now focus on finding a vendor to install red-light enforcement cameras on intersections along Illinois Highway 59, where most accidents occur. Officials hope to award a contract by July.

BATAVIA

Bicycle race will close a few downtown streets

Some downtown streets, including parts of Wilson Street and Illinois Highway 31, will be closed Memorial Day to accommodate the Athletes By Design Masters Bicycle Criterium, Mayor Jeff Schielke told the City Council this week.

Though the Wilson Street Bridge will remain open, vehicles westbound on Wilson will detour to Island Parkway, then to Houston Street to bypass the racecourse, which will start and end at Illinois 31 and 1st Street. The closings will begin early Memorial Day morning and will last until about 4 p.m., said Batavia MainStreet director Britta McKenna.

Though the ABD Cycle Club will hold races for adults 30 and older, Batavia MainStreet will hold several races for children at 11:45 a.m. Children will ride on Illinois 31 between 11:45 a.m. and 12:20 p.m., according to the event schedule.
