No. 12 Von Steuben closed the first half on a 14-4 run to open up a double-digit lead it never surrendered in its 55-28 victory over Brooks Wednesday in the first round of the Chicago Public Schools Holiday Invitational.

The two teams had combined for only six baskets in the first quarter. But the winning Panthers (8-2) never allowed more than 10 points in a quarter and held Brooks (4-2) to only four points in the fourth.

Von Steuben’s Cordarrel Eldridge had 14 points and 10 rebounds while fellow senior guard Mike DiNunno scored a game-high 19 points.

Von Steuben next takes on the winner of the Young-Dyett opening-round game. Brooks faces the loser in the consolation bracket Thursday at Englewood.
