John Madden watched game film of the Bears while making the bus trip from New York to Green Bay on Thursday. What he saw was a team playing bad football. However, he still doesn’t think the 1-3 Bears are a bad football team.
“They’re capable of turning it around,” said Madden, who will work with Al Michaels on the call of the Bears-Packers game Sunday night on WMAQ-Ch. 5. “They’re not going to be a passing team. [Brian Griese] threw 50 times last week. That’s not Chicago Bears football.
“The Chicago Bears still have a solid offensive line, good defense, great special teams. That’s what they have to get back to. I have a feeling. They’re off to a bad start, but they’re not going to be a bad team all year.”
Madden, however, didn’t like what he saw on film.
“Right now they’re doing everything a bad team does,” Madden said. “There are interceptions, fumbles, penalties. It’s not just one of those things. Offensively, they’re not good enough to live with all those turnovers and penalties. It’s not all the quarterback. They’re having the problems of a bad team.”
Madden expects there will be plenty of talk about the Griese-Rex Grossman situation on the telecast.
“I always laugh because every time you do a Bears game and talk about the quarterbacks, you always get back to Sid Luckman,” Madden said. “‘Remember, they had Sid Luckman.’ He was playing before I was born. Chicago just can’t seem to get a quarterback.”
