For months now, some of Barack Obama’s campaign staffers have been short-handing his young supporters — without irony — as “Generation BO.”
Conjuring up more pleasant connotations is the updated nickname, “Generation Obama,” also known as “GO.”
The fortunate revision comes just in time for this weekend’s kickoff of a youth organizing drive, which Obama will launch at an event in Miami on Saturday. Twenty other GO chapters will hold their own parties this weekend in Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Salt Lake City and other cities around the country.
The Obama campaign has devoted a lot of its resources to youth outreach for some time now, for instance with a Students for Barack Obama network that is organizing dozens of campus chapters around the country.
Campaign manager David Plouffe talks about the Obama clubs in grand terms.
“GO chapters are a clear indication,” he argues, “that Sen. Obama has created a nationwide movement for change.”
