“MATILDA” (star)(star)(star)
7 p.m., FAM
“Matilda” is a celebration of intelligence and learning. It’s written and directed by people who, on some level, love books and reading — and enjoy the idea of making a heroine out of a 6-year-old genius who can defeat her adult enemies by reading them into the ground, thinking them against the wall and brainstorming them silly.

“CLUELESS” (star)(star)(star)
9 p.m., MAX
The makeup-obsessed heroine of “Clueless” is a sweet Beverly Hills brat who doesn’t have a mean bone in her sculpted body. Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is adored by her hard-charging litigator father (Dan Hedaya) . . . embraced by her friends and indulged by her teachers. Her idea of a prank is to try to give a makeover to a plain-Jane teacher. “Clueless” was written and directed by Amy Heckerling (“Fast Times at Ridgemont High”), and once again she nails the speech patterns and preoccupations of her self-obsessed youthful characters.
