Early in his high school career, Rex Grossman received a motivational quote from his father, a pithy Calvin Coolidge bromide: “Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
He has brought the quote with him from high school to Florida to the Bears, and Grossman’s parents reference it immediately in discussing how their son deflected public criticism this season and led the Bears to the Super Bowl.
“He has lived it,” Dan Grossman said of the Coolidge quote. “He has been tested this year. But it doesn’t get him down. He has an amazingly strong mental toughness.”
There has been little discussion within his family about the waves of criticism Grossman endured this season. No one was deaf to it, but there was–and is–apparently nothing to gain by complaining about it.
“I think it has been difficult for him, and it’s not fun for us, but we’re just really proud of him for dealing with it in an honorable fashion and telling people to wait and see,” Maureen Grossman said.
