The Ravens finished 13-3 and earned the second seed in the AFC largely because of their suffocating defense. The Ravens allowed the fewest yards per game, 264, and the fewest points, 201. Talent was an obvious reason for their success. Health was another. The Ravens lost just 22 games by starters because of injuries. And the Ravens lost a defensive starter for only two games all season, both by middle linebacker Ray Lewis in November. The other 10 defensive starters were available all 16 games. Little wonder the Ravens posted two shutouts and held nine other opponents to two touchdowns or fewer. Coach Brian Billick was able to play nearly the entire season with his players of choice on defense.
