Offensive coordinator Norv Turner went to the 49ers with a reputation as a quarterback maker, but Frank Gore has been as big a beneficiary as Alex Smith. Gore has rushed for 1,542 yards and is positioned to win the franchise’s first NFC rushing title since Joe Perry in 1954. Gore has a 114-yard lead on New York’s Tiki Barber with one game to play. Conference rushing titles have become an expectation in a Turner offense. He has produced them at three previous stops: Emmitt Smith, with the Cowboys from 1991-93; Stephen Davis, with the Redskins in ’99, and Ricky Williams, with the Dolphins in 2002. Turner also called the plays when LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for his first 1,236 yards, as a rookie for San Diego in 2001.
