The school released a statement about the hiring late Monday, and Sky owner Michael Alter confirmed it but said he would not comment until an 11 a.m. news conference Tuesday.
Overton was 22-47 in two-plus seasons with Missouri-Kansas City. He replaces Dave Cowens, who left after the Sky’s inaugural 5-29 season in 2006 to join the Detroit Pistons’ coaching staff.
“Although I’d prefer not to leave in midseason, this is an outstanding opportunity,” Overton said in a statement on the school’s Web site.
